Choosing a new entry door

Most replacement entry doors come pre-hung, meaning the door slab arrives already mounted in a new frame with fresh weatherstripping and a sill. That's usually the best way to cure drafts, sticking and worn-out seals, because the whole system is new and square.

The big decision is material. Steel is strong and budget-friendly. Fiberglass resists dents and weather, needs very little upkeep, and can be made to look like stained wood. Real wood offers the richest look but needs refinishing to stay protected.

From there it's about style and security: glass inserts for light, sidelights and transoms to frame the entrance, and hardware like multi-point locks that secure the door at several points along the edge.

Why homeowners choose entry doors.

  • Better security

Solid cores, reinforced frames and multi-point locks.

  • Fewer drafts

Insulated cores and new weatherstripping keep heat in.

  • Curb appeal

A new door changes the whole face of the house.

  • Weather tough

Built for Chicago snow, rain and big temperature swings.

Is an entry door right for your home?

A great fit for

  • Drafty or sticking doors

A pre-hung replacement fixes the frame and seals too.

  • Dark entryways

Glass inserts, sidelights or a transom add light.

  • Security upgrades

Stronger frames and multi-point locking hardware.

  • Refreshing curb appeal

New color, style and hardware for the front of the home.

Good to know

  • Wood needs care

Real wood doors need periodic refinishing, especially in direct sun.

  • Steel can dent

Steel is strong but can dent and should be kept painted.

  • Sidelights change the opening

Adding them widens the rough opening and may affect trim.

Entry Doors: common questions

Steel, fiberglass or wood: which entry door is best?

Steel is the most secure for the money, fiberglass resists dents and weather with very little upkeep and can look like real wood, and wood offers the richest look but needs refinishing over time. We'll help you weigh looks, budget and how much sun and weather the door faces.

What is a pre-hung door?

A pre-hung door comes already mounted in a new frame, with hinges, weatherstripping and a sill. Replacing the whole unit usually seals much better than hanging a new slab in an old frame.

How long does it take to install a new front door?

Most single entry doors are installed in a day, so you're never left without a secure door overnight. Doors with sidelights or transoms can take a little longer.

Can I add sidelights to my existing door?

Often, yes, if the wall has room. Adding sidelights widens the opening, so we check framing and trim during the estimate.
