Picture Windows
A picture window is one large fixed pane designed to frame the view and pour daylight into a room. It doesn't open, which is exactly what makes it so efficient.

What is a picture window?
A picture window is a fixed window, meaning it has no moving sash. Without hinges, tracks or meeting rails, the frame can be slimmer and the glass larger, so you get the biggest possible view for the opening.
Because nothing opens, there are also no moving seals to wear out. A well-installed picture window with insulated glass is one of the most energy-efficient windows you can put in a wall.
Picture windows are often paired with operable windows. A large center pane with a casement or double-hung on each side gives you the view and the fresh air.
Why homeowners choose picture windows.
Maximum daylight
The largest glass area for the size of the opening.
Very efficient
No moving parts means no operable seals for air to sneak through.
Frames the view
Slim frames keep the focus on the yard, trees or skyline.
Low maintenance
No cranks, locks or tracks to adjust or wear out.
Is a picture window right for your home?
A great fit for
Living and family rooms
Where light and a view matter more than airflow.
Stairwells and high walls
Places you'd rarely reach to open a window anyway.
Ranch and mid-century homes
Wide picture windows are a signature of these styles.
Combined units
Flanked by casements or double-hungs for ventilation.
Good to know
No ventilation
Pair it with operable windows if the room needs fresh air.
Not an egress window
Bedrooms need at least one window that opens to code.
Safety glass near floors and doors
Large panes in some locations require tempered glass by code.
Picture Windows: common questions
Something we didn’t cover? Call (630) 901-6361 and ask Anna directly.
Do picture windows open?
No. A picture window is fixed. If you want fresh air in the same opening, we can combine it with casement or double-hung windows on one or both sides.
Are picture windows more energy efficient?
Generally, yes. With no operable sash there are fewer seals and joints for air to leak through, so a picture window with good insulated glass is one of the most efficient choices for a large opening.
How big can a picture window be?
Quite large, but size depends on the wall opening, the header above it and glass weight. We measure and check the structure during the estimate before recommending a size.
How do you clean the outside of a picture window?
On a ground floor, from outside with a squeegee or extension pole. For upper floors, flanking operable windows or a professional window cleaner make it easy.
