Bow Windows

A bow window uses four to six equal panels set in a gentle curve. The result is a wide, rounded projection with sweeping views and a softer look than a bay.

What is a bow window?

A bow window is several windows of the same size joined in an arc. Most have four or five panels, though wide walls can take six. Each panel sits at a shallow angle to the next, which together form a smooth curve.

Compared to a bay window, a bow projects a little less but spans more of the wall, so it gives a panoramic view and a graceful, rounded shape that suits Victorian, Queen Anne and traditional homes.

Some or all of the panels can open, usually as casements, so a bow can be as practical as it is good-looking. Like a bay, it needs proper support and a sealed roof cap above.

Why homeowners choose bow windows.

  • Panoramic view

A wide arc of glass takes in more of the yard or street.

  • Graceful shape

The soft curve adds character to traditional homes.

  • More light

Several panels bring daylight deep into the room.

  • Can open

Operable panels let you choose where the air comes in.

Is a bow window right for your home?

A great fit for

  • Wide living-room walls

Bows span more width than a three-panel bay.

  • Victorian and traditional homes

The curve matches their rounded details.

  • Rooms with a view

The arc captures a wider angle of the outdoors.

  • Replacing an aging bow

Older bows often sag or leak at the seat and roof.

Good to know

  • Wall width

Bows need a fairly wide opening to look right.

  • Support and roof cap

The unit needs proper support and a sealed roof above it.

  • Larger project

More panels and structure than a standard window swap.

Bow Windows: common questions

Something we didn’t cover? Call (630) 901-6361 and ask Anna directly.

How many panels does a bow window have?

Usually four or five, sometimes six on very wide walls. All the panels are the same size, which is what creates the even curve.

Is a bow window more expensive than a bay?

Often a bit more, because it has more panels and a wider span. The exact difference depends on size, materials and how many panels open. Your estimate will lay it out clearly.

Can bow window panels open?

Yes. Any of the panels can be casements, though many homeowners make the end panels operable and keep the middle ones fixed for the cleanest view.

Will a bow window make my room colder?

Not when it's built and installed properly. Insulated glass, insulated seat and head boards, and a well-sealed roof cap keep it as comfortable as the rest of the wall.
